ef-1 sycamore, il tornado
09 august 2021

on the afternoon of monday, 9 august 2021, a series of small but intense thunderstorms developed across northern illinois, producing multiple funnel clouds and tornadoes—mainly west of the chicago suburbs in dekalb and kane counties. the national weather service confirmed 10 tornadoes based on damage surveys and reports from storm spotters, law enforcement, and emergency officials. most were rated ef-0 or ef-1, causing light to moderate damage to trees, crops, and outbuildings, though a few tornadoes were unrated due to a lack of identifiable damage. one of the stronger tornadoes touched down south of bethany road, destroying two farm outbuildings, snapping tree trunks, and damaging a nearby home before widening to 150 yards as it tracked east toward airport road. it caused further ef-1 damage before lifting near the south branch of the kishwaukee river. i started recording the video on the right at 23:15z. my perspective looks due east from peace road in dekalb.
